We have results from three participants whose ancestors lived in Lincoln County, Tennessee, during the 19th century.

Benjamin George (1775 – 1846) (Participant G001)

Benjamin George was born about 1775, probably in Virginia. He was noted in the 1800 census for Pendleton District, South Carolina, and was living in Lincoln County, Tennessee, by 1810. He was living in Haywood County, Tennessee, in 1830 and died in Izard County, Arkansas, in 1846. A short study on the possible ancestry of Benjamin George is available.

Solomon George, Sr. (1824 – 1886)  (G004)

Solomon George was born 25 December 1824 in Wake County, North Carolina. He married Mary “Polly” Gray on 27 July 1848 in Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee. He died on 26 May 1886 in Kemper County, Mississippi.

Benjamin GEORGE and Related Families

Benjamin GEORGE was one of the earliest settlers of Lincoln County, Tennessee.  He was noted in records of land transactions
as early as 1810, two years after the establishment of the county. By 1820, 11 GEORGE families were noted in the U.S. census
for Lincoln County. There were about 18 GEORGE families listed in the 1850 census, but many of these families had immigrated
to Lincoln County during the 1830s and some of the original families had apparently moved out.  Based on land records and
the page numbers of the U.S. census enumerations between 1820 and 1850, we can take a reasonable guess at what GEORGE families were related during each period.  This information provides a good starting point for further research. The families
believed to be related to Benjamin GEORGE settled in the Tucker Creek area of Lincoln County east of Fayetteville.

 Land Records

Benjamin GEORGE and John GEORGE both purchased land on the waters of Tucker's Creek from Robert
TUCKER on August 3 1810. Benjamin GEORGE sold land on Tucker's Creek to James Lawrence in
February 1815. Between January and March 1819, land transactions in the Tucker Creek area included
a sale of land from Richard GEORGE to William GEORGE, a purchase of land by Thomas GEORGE
from Gideon and M. PILLOW, and a purchase of land by Benjamin GEORGE from Allen TUCKER.
On April 15, 1835, James GEORGE sold land on Tucker's Creek to Thomas GEORGE. Thomas S. GEORGE
was noted in several land transactions between 1844 and 1846, including the purchase of land from William
GEORGE on February 23, 1846.

William GEORGE and Related Families

William George was noted as a near neighbor of the Thomas (S.) George and Daniel A. George families in the 1850 census for Lincoln County, Tennessee.  The exact relationship between William George, age 40, and Thomas George, age 59, is not known. Daniel A. George, age 30, was the son of Thomas George, age 59. In the 1860 census, the families of Daniel A. George, Mary George, widow of Thomas S. George, and Newton J. George, son of Thomas S. George, were noted as near neighbors in district three.  The William George family was noted in the index and the census roll needs to be rechecked to determine additional information.

Based on the number and ages of the children, the Thomas George listed on page 20 of the 1840 census for Lincoln County, Tennessee, is probably Thomas S. George. Dan’l George of the right age to be Daniel A. George is listed on page 21. The families of William George, Sr., William George, Jr., and Owen George are also listed on page 21. Given the ages and the family composition, these are probably the related families of William George Sr. and Africa Rogers. The close proximity of the listings of these two family groups suggests a relationship between Thomas S. George and William George, Sr., husband of Africa Rogers. However, there are inconsistencies between the paper trails and the DNA evidence. Based on secondary sources, William George Sr. is a descendent of Nicholas George, Lancaster County, Virginia. Since Group One claims descent from Nicholas George, we should expect a match between Participant G017 and Group One if William George Sr. and the Thomas S. George families were related. The exact source of the inconsistencies is not known.
